Did you ever notice when reading a sentence, the understanding changes depending on where you put the emphasis? For example, read the following placing emphasis on the capitalized word:
- The LORD
is my shepherd
- The Lord IS
my shepherd
- The Lord is MY
shepherd
- The Lord is my SHEPHERD
Do you see how your understanding changes when the emphasis changes?
So which is correct? Technically, they all are. The sentence doesn't change, only the understanding. When you read scripture, read for understanding; and let the Holy Spirit guide you.
In John 1:4, "Him," refers to the Holy Spirit, not Jesus, as commonly preached. "Him" (Greek - autos) in this passage, is from the particle au, through the idea of a baffling wind. Jesus is never referred to as "wind." However, The Holy Spirit is described as a "mighty rushing wind" (Acts 2:2) and referred to in John 3:8 (same word, "autos")
Does it really matter?
Yes...because it is commonly preached that all you need to do to get eternal life is believe in Jesus; which is a misconception or misunderstanding of scripture. "Life," now and forever, comes through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, not belief in Jesus. It's why Jesus said, "Ye must be born again." (John 3:7)
Do Not Be Deceived: You do not receive the Holy Spirit, nor are you "born again," when you say, "I believe in Jesus." The disciples "believed" in Jesus, but they didn't receive the Holy Spirit until Pentecost (Acts 2:2). I believed in Jesus all my life, but it was not until I was illuminated in 1986 that I was reborn Spiritually. What changed? Everything.
You may be religious, go to church, tithe and believe in Jesus; but none of that matters if your thinking hasn't changed. When you are reborn Spiritually, you will have an insatiable hunger and thirst for God and his word and in innate desire to please God. If obedience to God and his word is not the priority of your life, you haven't been reborn Spiritually.
Until you are reborn Spiritually...nothing else matters.
