This is probably one of the most under-preached passages in the Bible.
It's repeated several times in scripture. Do you think it might be important?
When people want to know why their prayers aren't answered, they're often told it just wasn't God's will for them to have what they asked for. This confuses a lot of people (confusion is not of the Lord, so you know where that answer comes from).
Preachers love to quote John 14:14, where Jesus said, "If ye ask anything in my name, I will do it." It's the basis for the "Name it and Claim it" theology; and still very much preached today.
It's why you constantly hear "Christians" say, "In Jesus's name."
So which is it? Jesus would give it to you, but God doesn't want you to have it? It's no wonder people get mad at God. They just lack understanding.
First and foremost, God is not an ATM machine. Next, he's your heavenly Father, not your BFF.
God is Holy. He doesn't hear sinners. If there is unrepentant sin in your life, your prayers aren't heard. While preachers love to say "Ask," they fail to give you the whole message: "That my Father may be glorified." If answering your prayer doesn't glorify God...there's your answer. Or, as James said, "Ye ask amiss..." (James 4:3)
Other than praying for my friends and family, I can't remember the last time I asked God for anything...definitely not a new car or the winning lottery numbers.
If you're God's kid, you don't need to ask for anything; your Father already knows what you need before you ask...and it's his good pleasure to give it to you. (Luke 12:32). If you're wondering why your prayers aren't answered, it could be unrepentant sin in your life that has separated you from God. God doesn't hear the prayers of sinners (John 9:31)
He does hear all prayers of repentance. Repent of your sins...and God will welcome you back with open arms.
However, until you're reborn Spiritually, until you know, without a doubt, God is real...nothing else matters
